Patriots Cup Format

The purpose is to create a tournament that all PYLL teams can participate in and finish the season in the excitement of a playoff atmosphere. The Patriot Cup is open only to current members of the Patriot Youth Lacrosse League.

Team Requirements:
 
  • 100% participation in the 2010 Patriot League regular game schedule
  • Payment of all tournament fees
  • Team roster must be consistent with regular season roster. No exceptions. Period.
  • Programs entering less teams at any level that participated in regular season play will require PYLL Board of Directors approval
  • Head coach must meet all Patriot League coach requirements

Tournament Seeding Rules:

  • Seeding will be dictated by the league standings for Sunday and Mid Week Bye Games scheduled by the PYLL only.
  • Midweek games scheduled by the individual teams will not count in the standings
  • In the event of a tie at the end of Divisional play the following tie breaker will be used to determine the higher seed.
o Head to head games between the teams
o A two hat system - One with the team name the other with the seed position. One is pulled from each hat at the same time to determine team seed. The PYLL Tournament Committee
o The PYLL of Directors is the sole body to determine final tournament seed positions.

Tournament Format:
  • All levels will be divided into East / West and North / South Divisions
  • The East Division will be the top seeds, West the second group, North then South
  • A round robin tournament will be held in each division to determine a Divisional semi-finalist that then plays for the Championship
  • The Round Robin tournament will have the following format
  • The East Division will be the top teams in the standings i.e. 1-4 or 1-6. West follows then North and South
  • Each Division will begin round robin play with a mid-week game in the first or second week of June
  • The higher seed will have the right of first refusal to host this midweek game
  • Each team is guaranteed a minimum of three games one midweek and two on tournament day
  • Semi-finalists will play a third game to determine a champion
  • Consolation games will be played with the North and South Divisions at the U15 and U13 level to ensure a minimum of three games.
  • Regulation Games will be played per PYLL Rules with the exception that U13 and U15 Levels will play 10 Minute Stop Time.
  • In the event of tied score at the end of regulation time sudden victory overtimes   determine the winner.
  • U15 and U13 - 4 Minute Sudden Victory periods will be played. If a tie remains at the end of the first period there will be a 2 minute break. Teams swap sides and commence with second OT period of 4 minutes. This continues till a winner is declared.
  • U11 and U9 – A 15 Minute running time OT period will be played. If a tie remains at the end of the first period there will be a 2 minute break. Teams swap sides and commence with second OT period of 8 minutes running time. This continues till a winner is declared
  • In the event of a ties at the end of Divisional play the following tie breaker will be used to determine the Divisional Winner
  • Head to head games between the teams
  • Goals Against with the team with lowest total advancing
  • Coin toss by PYLL Tournament Officials at the location
  • The East Divisional Winner advances to the semi-finals and plays the West
  • The North Divisional Winner advances to the semi-finals and plays the South
  • Each playing level will crown two champions

Referee and Pregame Meetings:
 
  • Referees will be contacted prior to the beginning of the tournament and given the PYLL Rules in particular U9 and U11 levels
  • Pre-game meetings between opposing coaches and the referees will still need to take place per PYLL rules
 
 
Zero Tolerance Rules:
  • Fighting – Any players ejected for fighting by game officials must be escorted from the field by a guardian. Per PYLL Rules the player is suspended for the next scheduled game. The PYLL Tournament Official at the location must be notified.
  • Conduct - It is expected and assumed that the right things will happen on the on the field, on the bench, and in the stands. In the event this does not happen the Officials and the PYLL Tournament Official on site has reserves the right to expel any individual from the event.
  • The PYLL Tournament Representative at the location is the final decision maker in all cases of conduct issues.

Tournament Rules: Full tournament rules will be distributed in early June.
